Americans are a religious people. 90 percent of us believe in God, 70 percent affiliate themselves with an organized religion, 38 percent call themselves committed Christians, and substantially more people in America believe in angels than they do in evolution.And the Senator clearly says this approvingly. Which is his right. When it comes to personal belief systems, whatever gets you through the night is all right, and if Barack Obama believes the country is better off with a citizenry that can't distinguish fact from fiction, well, that's OK. Really. But a problem arises when Senator Obama puts forth such propositions in public and insists we take him seriously. Because those of us who subscribe to no mythology tend to avoid debate with people who argue like this: But, you know, my Bible tells me that if we train a child in the way he should go, when he is old he will not turn from it.The problem is obvious, right? Barack Obama has a Bible that tells him stuff and he's happy to wave it about in the public square. Secular people, meanwhile, rely on empirical fact and rational logic to make their case. It's just too much like taking candy from a baby. | |

Plus: Veracity Check. Mr. Goldberg writes that Senator Barack Obama "even defended school prayer", but this depiction deviates from the reality. What the Senator specifically said in his unfortunate speech this week was:
Having voluntary student prayer groups use school property to meet should not be a threat, any more than its use by the High School Republicans should threaten Democrats. Permitting after-hours voluntary student-led prayer groups to meet on school grounds is a far cry from "school prayer" as commonly construed - which is as official, mandatory, prescribed school-time prayer. The former is common and mostly uncontroversial while the latter is abhorrent and unconstitutional. Jonah Goldberg slurs Senator Obama by implying he supports imposed school prayer. (Yes, Senator Obama's subsequent rather weak apologia for the god clause in the Pledge hardly puts him in staunch opposition to religious indoctrination in public schools. But he did not endorse school prayer the way most readers understand the term.) | |
