What bokononists whisper whenever they think of how complicated and unpredictable the machinery of life really is.

By Elton Beard

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who divide people into two kinds and those who don't. I don't.

Shorter Thomas L. Friedman:
'Oops. I Told the Truth.'
  • Given a choice between John Kerry and George W. Bush, I prefer Bill Cosby.

11:00 PM PT

Shorter Martin Peretz:
Kerry the Clueless
  • John Kerry would handle Israel the way Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton did and George W. Bush, l'havdil, does not.

Plus: What did the two dreaded ex-presidents do to Israel? Let's review:

Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat, left, and Prime Minister Menachem Begin at the signing of a peace treaty in Washington, D.C. in 1979, following negotiations launched when President Jimmy Carter invited both leaders to meet at Camp David in 1978. In July 1994 Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, right, and King Hussein of Jordan, left, came together in the United States, in the presence of President Bill Clinton, to sign a peace agreement ending 46 years of war and tension between their countries.

Wouldn't want any more of that now, would we?

We're All Rhinoceros On This Bus. Interviewing Secretary of Commerce Don Evans on CNN Late Edition, Wolf Blitzer revealed some new poll numbers and maybe something about himself as well:
BLITZER: We've got a new CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll just out right now, first time we're releasing these numbers taken over the past few days. Among likely voters, take a look at this, 53 percent for President Bush, 44 percent for Senator Kerry, Ralph Nader at one percent. Registered voters 49 percent for President Bush, 46 percent for Senator Kerry, one percent for Ralph Nader. It looks good, at least those numbers, other polls show slightly different numbers. By all accounts, though, I think you'll agree, Secretary Evans, I think it's going to be very close.

EVANS: Oh Wolf it is, I mean it's been encouraging to see the trend, the momentum beginning to now move towards President Bush...

Oh, Wolf. Don't look now, but your slip is telling.

Note: As of this posting, the transcript (per link on CNN's October 17 index) is AWOL.

Shorter Charles Krauthammer:
An Edwards Outrage
  • To exploit the desperate hopes of desperate people with the promise of Christ-like cures is beyond the pale, unless behind a pulpit.

The Loofah Is Not A Falafel.

This is a loofah. The loofah is a rather coarse bath sponge made from the dried, fibrous part of fruits of the genus Luffa.
This is falafel. Falafel is a piquant Middle-Eastern delicacy made of ground spiced chickpeas and often served in a pita with salad, hummus and tahini.
This is Bill O'Reilly. Bill O'Reilly needs to learn the difference between a loofah and falafel (with or without hummus) before further complications ensue.

Update: And now, The Falafel Factor.

Shorter Max Boot:
The Man Who Was Unchanged
  • A rational, proportional or realistic response to 9/11 is so 9/10.

Shorter David Brooks:
Not Just a Personality Clash, a Conflict of Visions
  • There are two kinds of people in the world, those who understand that there are other kinds of people in the world, and those who don't.

See Also: Timothy McSweeney's paradigmatic David Brooks.

2:30 PM PT

Shorter Sebastian Mallaby:
A Reason to Back the President?
  • A pointless, hopelessly bungled war is still better than no war at all.

2:00 PM PT

Shorter William Raspberry:
Hoping For Busy Signals
  • I grow bored with your foolish election.

1:30 PM PT

Shorter William Safire:
How Bush Won Round 2
  • The rude, furious, incoherent little man who strutted and sputtered and fumbled his facts was abjectly out-debated by the dignified, erudite and much taller Mr. Bush.
