Shorter David S. Broder: Politics For the Disengaged

Plus: Not Kidding.
Mr. Broder is quite explicit about this. He speaks of young people
as the "target audience" for the third-party campaign, and tells us
that "polling and practicality suggest that the notion of an
Internet-generated third ticket would have its greatest appeal to
younger Americans."
Now, does Broder's endorsement of a movement virtually certain to harm Democratic candidates more than Republicans indicate that he is something other than an honest, neutral observer of the two parties? Maybe he's completely unaware of the strong affinity that younger voters show for Democrats nationally - John Kerry's best performance in 2004 came from those aged 18 to 29, who gave him 54% of their vote vs. 46% for Mr. Bush. Maybe. But does anyone really believe Broder can't figure out which of the two major parties would lose more votes to a third party "which explicitly puts down social issues, such as abortion and gay marriage ... while emphasizing education, the environment, health care and energy"? Surely, even a Washington Post Op-Ed writer could not be that detached from reality. And: A Challenge for David Broder. You indicate agreement with those who "are frustrated by the spectacle of both parties catering to entrenched interest groups and ideological extremes". Are you serious, Mr. Broder? Please name one ideologically extreme position held by the Democratic Party. Just one will do. To start the ball rolling, let's note the Republicans' current push for a constitutional amendment to define marriage - which has been a state issue since the founding of the Republic - at the federal level. Match that for extremism, David Broder. Match that, or eat your words. | |
