To Kill a Mocking Word. Mickey Kaus of kausfiles (or is it Kausfiles? Make up your mind, Slate!) accuses Paul Krugman of intolerance:

Paul Krugman thinks "opposition to abortion" is "intolerance"--at least if he means what he writes in today's NYT. Why isn't opposition to abortion a form of principled idealism with which Krugman disagrees? Who's intolerant here? ...
What exactly is the issue here? Can't a principled idealism also be intolerant of some things? Conversely, since Krugman's stance is presumably also based on principled idealism, is he not likewise absolved of intolerance under this new rule? Or is this just rhetorical jiu-jitsu, using the opponent's strength against the opponent?

The thing is that this sort of "I know what you are but what am I?" stuff serves only to muddy the meaning - and reduce the impact - of "intolerant" as an epithet. It blurs the distinction between legitimate intolerance (e.g. brooking no spitballs in class) and socially proscribed intolerance (e.g. whites-only facilities). Moreover, blunting the normative sting of an insult generally applied to racists, theocrats, misogynists and the like would mostly hurt liberals and the left. Now, that couldn't be what Mickey Kaus is consciously trying to do, could it?

P.S.: A similar case can be made that the concept of "principled idealism" is also being somewhat attrited here. And with similar results...
